Should We Hire a DJ or a Band?

We’re at an impasse when it comes to reception music: I want a band, but my fiancé is insisting on a DJ. How do we compromise?

You can resolve this in a couple of ways: start off with the more formal band for all the sentimental dances, then later in the evening the DJ can take the stage. Or, look for a DJ/band combo; many companies will hire both out to the same wedding, and the DJ spins tunes during the band’s breaks.

More important to resolve than the band/DJ difference is what lies underneath the musical tug-of-war. Does your fiancé fear an overly stuffy event, so he’s down on the eight-piece band? Do you not want a DJ because you think he’ll turn into a cheesy Master of Ceremonies? Talk out what the real issues are, define what it is you both want out of the wedding, and then go from there.
